In industry, we often talk about slips, trips, and falls being some of the most common injuries experienced in the workplace. Hazards, such as water, equipment, and uneven surfaces, can lead to unforeseen and unfortunate outcomes. These are outcomes that you can visually see, and these visual outcomes are easy to manage.
2023: A Year of Creating Change
Over the last couple of days, I have spent some time reflecting on the last year – the goals we set out for our Member Services team here at AMTA, the impact we desired to make, the impact we made, the successes we celebrated, but also areas that we can continue to work on to become better.
Employers – It’s a leap year! You have until Feb. 29 to file your WCB-Alberta annual return
As an employer with workers, you’re required to fill out an annual return reporting your workers’ assessable earnings paid in the last year along with what earnings you expect to pay in the upcoming year. This is important information to ensure you’re paying the correct premium amount.
Parks Canada: Law Enforcement Request For Public Information
A poaching offence likely occurred between the hours of 4 pm on October 16 and 10 am on October 17. Parks Canada’s Law Enforcement Branch is asking for the public’s help in providing information about this incident that could lead to the identification of those responsible. Update: 2024 WCB Industry Rates Announced
On Dec 6, 2023, WCB announced the 2024 industry rates. The average industry rate will increase from $1.26 by 10 cents (7.9%) to $1.36 rather than $1.51, which would be required to cover the total forecasted claims cost. For 2024 WCB will absorb the additional costs (15 cents) from its accident fund, to cover a portion of employer premiums.
In Memoriam: Mayne Root
It is with sadness that AMTA has learned of the passing of Mayne Root. Mayne has long been considered an iconic influence within the transportation safety/enforcement industry. Those of you who have known him personally can attest to his stalwart leadership in serving as AMTA’s Executive Director between 2003 and 2010 after an extensive career with the Calgary Police Service for 30 years.

Canada Introduces Mandatory Provision of Menstrual Products in the Workplace
As of December 15, 2023, employers will be obligated to make clean and hygienic tampons and menstrual pads readily available to all employees at no cost.
