CTA Ready to Work with New Ministers to Rid Trucking of Trade Barriers, Tariffs and Underground Economy
The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) is welcoming Prime Minister Carney’s new cabinet and urging swift action on critical issues affecting the trucking sector. CTA President Stephen Laskowski emphasized the importance of political will to address long-standing challenges such as internal trade barriers, regulatory inefficiencies, unfair competition, and the rise of the underground economy.
In its pre-election policy paper, CTA called on the federal government to eliminate unnecessary taxes like the carbon tax, secure the border amid ongoing tariff tensions, reform immigration and GHG regulations, and crack down on noncompliance costing the economy over $1 billion annually. The Alliance looks forward to collaborating with ministers to restore fairness and productivity across Canada’s trucking industry.
Green Freight Program – Commercial Carriers Funding Program to Support Sustainable Efforts
Organizations across Alberta’s commercial transportation sector are working to reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. The Green Freight Program supports these efforts through funding for fleet assessments, equipment retrofits, vehicle repowers, and the adoption of low-carbon vehicles.
Stream 1 offers up to $250,000 annually for third-party fleet energy assessments and approved truck and trailer retrofits. Stream 2 provides cost-shared contributions for projects such as repowering vehicles, purchasing low-carbon alternatives, and implementing fuel-efficient logistical practices.
AMTA supports carriers through initiatives like the AZETEC hydrogen truck project and partnerships with experts such as GreenerFleets, which has helped over 100 fleets complete energy assessments under the program. The Green Freight Program helps Canadian fleets take measurable steps toward sustainability—reducing emissions, improving fuel efficiency, and futureproofing operations.
Providing Fleets with the Data They Need to Explore Alternative Fuels
For nearly 150 years, there has been a focused effort to design, develop, and commercialize automobiles, their engines, and ultimately the fuel sources they utilize. From three-wheeled automobiles in 1886 to the four-, six-, 10-, and 14-wheeled power units we see today.
The evolution of these vehicles follows a particular pattern, like most products or services that had to undergo a rigorous process to be commercialized.
