AMTA’s Truck Driving Simulator Training

AMTA owns two simulators, one based out of our Rocky View office, and another based out of our Edmonton office. These simulators are used for training and can be transported to off-site locations, as needed. Simulation exposes drivers to various scenarios, allowing them to increase their confidence and hone their skills in a controlled environment. Various scenario modules allow for targeted, customized training for each driver.

For more information, and to arrange simulator training at either our Calgary or Edmonton AMTA office, or in the field at a location of your choice,  please contact: wss@amta.ca. Please note that the simulators can book out months in advance.

The Most Critical Component

The most critical component of a training simulator is the ability to practice skills and behaviors in a controlled environment. Students can be exposed to situations and conditions they may not normally encounter in the real world, allowing them to practice critical responses.

Key Features

  • Automatic and manual transmissions

    • Automatic and automated manual transmissions

    • Eaton-Fuller 10-, 13-, 18-speed manual transmissions

  • High-performance compact 3-axis motion system

  • High fidelity visual scenes with virtual 360-degree view from driver’s seat

  • Realistic steering wheel, clutch, throttle and brake response

The Visual

The visual span of a simulator’s driver’s seat provides real-life perspective with a 180-degree forward field of view. Rear-view mirrors are built in and all visual representation is supported by LCD high resolution display technology.

Training Programs

The following programs are offered to meet your organization’s needs:

  • Shifting an Eaton-Fuller 10-, 13-, or 18-speed manual transmission

  • Skid control

  • Handling wheel drop-offs

  • Ditch entry (rollover prevention)

  • Head-on collision avoidance

  • Snowplow operations

The simulator scenario designs are based on proven, applied principles. Lessons and evaluations will be performed under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Attention can be given to shifting, maneuvering in confined areas, optimizing vehicle performance and hazard recognition.

The most significant benefit of a simulated experience is the evaluation process by  providing hands-on learning and immediate feedback.

The two VS 600M Truck Driving Simulators were developed by Virage Simulation. Watch the video to see the simulator in action, and learn more about the technology here.

“In real-world training, some objectives are too risky, too slow, or simply impossible to achieve at all. In a simulator, we can expose drivers to various hazards; we can replicate and simulate the most complex driving tasks and traffic situations; and we can objectively score driver performance. In the real world, this level of safety and precision in training is difficult to achieve. And of course, using the simulator is cost-effective compared to using an actual truck.”

Testimonials

Ledcor

“Expanding upon our established, snowplow training program, Ledcor Highways wanted to further prepare our operators for the risks and hazards associated with operating a snowplow. By collaborating with AMTA, we were able to deliver a comprehensive snowplow simulator training program to over 100 operators, prior to the winter season.

Quick Driver Performance Evaluations:
With the simulator, instructors were able to identify areas where the driver excelled, as well as work with the foreman on areas of improvement.

Reduced In-Cab Training:
As compared to in-cab training where weather events are required, it was possible to virtually expose the operators to various risks and hazards in a short period of time.

Leading the Industry:
Ledcor is committed to being an industry leader in the provision of safe, quality services in all aspects of our business through continuous improvement and innovation. Partnering with AMTA on simulator training enhanced our snowplow training program for our operators, exemplifying this commitment.”

Fortis Alberta

“Utilizing AMTA’s driving simulator was a great way for Fortis Alberta to live into its strategy to promote professional driving and increase the skill level of our drivers. AMTA’s instructors were very professional and delivered classroom instruction along with hands-on training using the latest in simulator technology. Having this mobile training delivered to our offices throughout Alberta worked well, and was less disruptive to our workforce. Our drivers both enjoyed and benefited from the training. We would definitely recommend this program.”

Fort McKay Group of Companies LP

“Fort McKay Logistics (FML) would like to congratulate the AMTA on the delivery of a very successful defensive driving training program. Blending the classroom portions of the course with their state-of-the-art truck simulator was truly beneficial as it provided our drivers with the ability to put the theory they’ve learned into practice. FML is dedicated to having the safest fleet on the road and with the help of AMTA, our drivers will have the tools and knowledge to maintain that standard.

FML recommends the AMTA to anyone who is looking at getting the best training for their drivers.”
