Back to School Traffic Safety
As kids head back to school, drivers are urged to slow down and stay alert in school zones, crosswalks, and near buses. Most school bus collisions happen in urban areas, and failing to stop for a bus with flashing red lights can cost $567 and six demerit points. Safe, attentive driving helps ensure every child gets to and from school safely

Hiring challenges for trucking and logistics employers continue to ease in 2025
New data from Trucking HR Canada (THRC) shows the trucking and logistics industry’s post-pandemic hiring surge is continuing to cool in 2025. Second quarter employment dipped slightly down 0.2% overall and 1.1% among transport truck drivers while the number of people seeking work in the sector rose by 11,600 compared to last year. For employers, this means a larger talent pool and an opportunity to recruit skilled workers more easily to support business growth.
Driver Inc.: the scourge of commercial transportation
The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) is calling for action against the exploitative Driver Inc. scheme, where employers misclassify drivers as independent operators to avoid paying benefits and protections. This practice leaves many, especially new immigrants without overtime, vacation pay, EI, CPP, or WCB coverage, while exposing them to unsafe working conditions and financial risk. Governments and industry partners are ramping up roadside enforcement, but stronger regulations, tougher penalties, and better inter-agency coordination are needed. AMTA urges you to contact your elected officials and support measures that protect drivers, uphold fair competition, and strengthen road safety. The goal is to modernize the regulation while maintaining high safety standards. Four virtual consultation sessions will be held in August and September, and stakeholders can also share feedback via an online survey. To participate, email cvse.modernization@gov.bc.ca.
