Want to See a Dump Trailer
Rollover
Well, now you can and
you don't have to worry about the driver's safety,
because it was all staged. PEI-based live bottom trailer
manufacturer Trout River Industries has compiled this
YouTube video to demonstrate just how easily a dump
truck (or trailer) with a raised body can end up shiny
side down.
Although it pained me to see a seemingly decent truck
wrecked, it is worth watching as it's a bit startling to
see just how quickly things can go wrong. (It should be
pointed out some wet, sticky material was placed at the
front of the trailer to encourage the rollover, but the
company points out it's not an uncommon occurrence in
the real world). Don't be alarmed about the apparent
fuel spill, by the way, it was just vegetable oil. Trout
River is now distributing the video for training
purposes and, of course, to encourage the use of live
bottom trailers.

very well be their workplace.
Improve safety for Emergency Responders by
looking at your workplace through the eyes of
firefighters, paramedics and police officers.
This John Petropoulos Memorial Fund project includes the
production of a short safety video and three
thirty-second PSA’s intended for television and online

AMTA Unveils TV Ad to be Aired
During 2010 Olympics
Today’s trucking industry is working hard to shift
tired, negative stereotypes of the trucking industry,
toward an image that reflects the realities of the
modern industry. Today’s industry sector embraces modern
training practices, utilizes cutting edge technology and
environmentally sound equipment to transport the goods
necessary for modern life.
One of the AMTA mandates is to communicate clearly to
the public, legislators and other stakeholders about the
modern industry’s focus on “Safety,” “Training,” and
“Professionalism.” By and large trucks on the road today
are driven by skilled men and women who put a lot of
emphasis on safety, have been trained in the various
functions associated with driving, and who are
professionals, with all that that implies.
AMTA has just released a new TV ad, slated to air in
conjunction with the 2010 Olympic Games, which does just
that. The new production compares all that athletes have
to go through to be the best when competing at national
and international events with what professional drivers
must achieve in their training to be the best. The new
30-second TV ad draws a parallel between bobsledding and
truck driving. Relatively fast-paced, but focusing on
the training and safety aspects, the ad demonstrates
that the same elements seen in sport competitions are
part of the drivers daily activities.
The ad will start playing numerous times/day on CBC
across the province of Alberta between February 1 and
March 13. You can view the ad now:

On-Site Audit Review
Pilot Project – Coming Soon
Reprint from Alberta OH&S
magazine - September 2009
All Certifying Partners conduct detailed desktop reviews
of employer COR certification and maintenance audit
reports. This review is limited to submitted
documentation, which is effective at identifying many
audit report quality issues, but may not always identify
issues with auditor process. The concept of further
validating audit findings by conducting on-site employer
re-audits has been suggested for several years by CPs,
Partners and auditors. While a full re-audit would
require significant resources, Partnerships is proposing
a streamlined and efficient On-Site Audit Review process
that will be limited to evaluating key indicators of
auditor performance.
The OSAR process is designed to be completed in one day
(to minimize any disruption to the employer’s business).
It is intended to validate the auditor’s work by
comparing specific OSAR auditor findings to the original
auditor’s results. OSAR will focus on auditor
performance.
Partnerships will be piloting this process in the near
future by conducting 100 on-site audit reviews. The data
gathered from this project will allow Partnerships to
identify whether or not the OSAR process is necessary to
supplement the current quality assurance system to
ensure the validity of audit results. If the process is
valid, Partnerships will determine the best methodology
for implementation over the long term.
