About the AMTA

The Alberta Motor Transport Association is a province-wide, not-for-profit Association formed to provide a voice for the highway transportation industry in Alberta. The role of the AMTA is to help our Members succeed by providing training programs and promoting safety initiatives that reduce workplace injuries. We represent the highway transportation industry at the provincial and national levels in dealing with issues such as regulations, trans-border crossings, taxation, safety, the environment, and the future of trucking.

Members of the Association include:

Note: WCB Account Holders from three industry categories, General Trucking (50714), Specialty Hauling (50701) or Garbage Hauling (57901) are  AMTA Safety members  and not full Carrier members of the AMTA but have access to Safety services and Safety products at member rates.  Full Carrier members have access to both Safety Services and Regulatory Affairs issues, committees and communications.

Members make up our advisory boards and task force committees to ensure that all programs and initiatives carried out by the Association are done in the best interest of the Membership and the industry. The Association's affairs are managed from our head office in Calgary and another branch in Edmonton.

Promoting and assisting in the establishment of high standards of safety and compliance for the benefit of the motor transport industry, it’s employees and the public.
Providing proven safety management principles.
Developing and providing training for the motor transport industry to enhance workplace health and the reduction of injuries.
Advising government on matters concerning the highway transportation industry.
Offering value added services to increase the profitability of our members.
Fostering and promoting a professional image of the industry.

Injury Reduction & Training

The Injury Reduction and Training (IRT) Advisory Council represents the interests of the trucking industry in Alberta to reduce and prevent workplace injuries. The Advisory Board oversees and develops AMTA safety programs in accordance with members’ needs and established program guidelines and criteria. The mission of the IRT Advisory Board is to educate people involved in transportation on matters affecting the operation of safe facilities and devices, as well as the laws and regulations governing the transportation of goods. Its objectives are to design new safety programs, identify training needs and to monitor and evaluate the performance of new and existing programs and services.

Compliance & Regulatory Affairs
The Compliance and Regulatory Affairs (CRA) Advisory Board addresses and formulates AMTA response positions and policies on all regulatory issues affecting the trucking industry. The CRA Advisory Board oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of policy recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Mission of the CRA Advisory board is to respond to industry issues in regulatory compliance covering National and Provincial OH&S and Vehicle issues; to be proactive in the development of impending legislation modifications or initiatives impacting the industry and to identify the need for training services to our members to enable compliance with current and proposed legislation.

Strategic Partnerships:


The Alberta Motor Transport Association maintains strategic alliances with various stakeholders and government agencies.

 

The AMTA's primary mandate is to promote safety and injury reduction in the trucking industry and to dedicate funds to safety initiatives such as the development safety training programs that meet the needs of our membership in order to improve safety practices and reduce injuries in the workplace. 
The AMTA is a member of the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) a federation of all provincial trucking associations across Canada, representing a broad cross section of the trucking industry
The role of the CTA is to lobby the Canadian and US governments on issues of national and international significance on behalf of the industry. CTA offers representation on matters related to federal taxes, the National Safety Code, Canadian and US Customs services, improvements to the national highway system, commercial vehicle emissions and other environmental concerns.
AMTA is a certifying Partner in the Partnerships Program with Alberta  Employment   and Immigration. The designation of Certifying Partner is given to Partners who are responsible for assessing the quality of health and safety programs in Alberta, and issuing a Certificate of recognition (COR) to employers.

The AMTA works closely with Alberta Transportation   to ensure that our Members stay informed about the issues that effect their business
PIC Plate  A joint venture between the Alberta Motor Transport Association  and Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation, the Partners in Compliance Program is designed to address the issues of regulatory non- compliance and its costly repercussions. The purpose of PIC is not only to assist carriers in developing their own internal regulatory compliance and maintenance program, it is designed to reduce the financial and human costs of incidents through diligent, ongoing self-maintenance practices. The Partners in Compliance program offers participating carriers realistic, achievable goals that guarantee success if established benchmarks are met

AMTA is a certifying partner in the Partnerships Program  with Alberta  Employment  and Immigration. It is designed to encourage injury prevention and the development of effective workplace health, safety and disability management systems. AMTA has been a recognized Certifying Partner with the Partners in Injury Reduction Program (PIR) since 1994.


The AMTA also works closely with Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation (AIT) and the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to ensure that our Members stay informed about the issues that effect their business.
