VIPs' Western Hospitality Greet
Trucking Competitors
Canada’s top-ranked truck drivers who traveled to Calgary from
across Canada to compete at the National Truck Driving
Championships (Sept. 8-11) enjoyed first-class treatment from
event organizers and provincial dignitaries.
This year’s competition was hosted by the Alberta Motor
Transport Association (AMTA)which delivered a highly-successful
event laced with ample western hospitality.
The four-day event got underway on Thursday evening with an
elegant reception attended by over 130 guests at the Calgary
Airport Radisson Hotel.
Competitors and their families were officially welcomed to
Alberta by a full slate of AMTA’s Board of Directors, Calgary
Deputy Mayor Jim Stevenson and Alberta’s Minister of Employment
and Immigration Thomas Lukaszuk. Deputy Mayor Stevenson greeted
visitors with Calgary’s legendary white hat ceremony bestowing
each of the guests with a white cowboy hat.
Over the next two days, competitors participated in the rigorous
competition which included a written exam, truck inspection, and
a series of precision driving manoeuvres.
Competitors and their families also enjoyed a guided tour of the
world-famous and breathtaking Banff townsite and surrounding
area, followed by a BBQ supper at the historic Brewster Ranch in
the Rockies.
AMTA also introduced a special addition to the national event –
a guest program for the enjoyment of wives and significant
others who traveled with the competitors. Spa treatments and
psychic readings were very popular and greatly enjoyed. So were
the line-dancing workshops.
The awards banquet on Saturday evening was very-ably presided
over by past AMTA President Gene Orlick who served as Master of
Ceremonies. VIPs on hand at the ceremony were Deputy Mayor Jim
Stevenson and MLA Wayne Cao.
