June  2010

Message to our Readers

Summer is here and the first half of this year has already passed. The first six months of 2010 have been busy for the Alberta Motor Transport Association on all fronts. We have seen a big uptake on our new training facility in Calgary and many organizations have been taking advantage of the wonderful facilities to host meetings and hold training sessions.

The list includes everything from Certifying Partner meetings to seminars on various regulatory changes the industry is facing. The most recent event held in the John Tessier classroom was the new WCB workshop we are offering at no charge entitled “Put the Brakes on WCB Rates.” The session was well attended and the feedback from the participants was very positive. We have already scheduled the next workshop to be held in Edmonton during the month of October.

April saw our annual conference and AGM at the lovely Rimrock Hotel located in Banff. Dean Paisley of Lethbridge Truck Terminals has taken over the helm as the new AMTA President and is surrounded by some old and new faces on the Board of Directors. The staff looks forward to working with the Board over the next year.

Our draw down dinners and golf tournaments were a huge success this year and fun was had by all. For those of you who missed out on the golf, you still have a chance to play in September when the Calgary golf tournament takes place. Be sure to register soon!

The driver appreciation barbecues at various scales around the province have been going well and in September we have barbecues planned for the Balzac and Demmitt scales the week of September 6th.

We cannot forget to mention the Provincial Truck Driving Championships held June 19th in Red Deer; be sure to check our website for the list of this year’s champions. The Alberta team will be competing at this year’s national competition which will take place in Winnipeg September 16th -18th.

Wow, so much has happened! As mentioned at the beginning of this article, summer is here so be sure to get out and enjoy the weather and your favorite activities with family and friends.

Have a safe summer and we will see you in September.
