AMTA End of
Year Message
Dear
AMTA Member —
The books on 2009 will soon be closed. The end of the year is a
time to
reflect on the previous twelve months. I know that for many in
the trucking industry, 2009 was very challenging.
With the dawn of the New Year just ahead, there will no doubt be
more challenges. But, there will also be new opportunities and
new prospects. From all of us at the AMTA,
we wish you and yours a happy and safe holiday season and a
healthy and prosperous 2010.
It has been very heartening for me over the past year to see how
AMTA’s Regulatory Affairs Partnership members have continued to
be involved and how the RAP program
has grown – despite tough economic times. The unwavering support
of RAP members helps
AMTA influence regulatory issues that
affect the entire industry. This year we worked with industry
and government to clarify changes to the new Commercial Vehicle
Safety and Vehicle Equipment Regulations, the new U.S. monitoring
system – CSA 2010, and we are
currently providing input on several proposed changes to the
Commercial Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulations. The
AMTA is committed to enhancing the
industry’s health and safety performance and supporting Alberta businesses as
they strive to make their workplace safe and productive.
After a great deal of input by industry and work by staff, we
rolled out the Safe Loading and Unloading course this year to
help reduce worker injuries in these critical functions. We also
succeeded in getting the Professional Driver Improvement Course
and some of the Transportation Safety Basics course available
on-line. These have been well received and we look forward to
offering more courses that will help enhance your organization
in the year ahead.
On behalf of the entire staff, we look forward to serving this
great
industry in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Mayne Root
Executive Director
