December 2011

Year-End Message from Don Wilson, Executive Director

It has been a very exciting year at AMTA — the Board’s strategic plan gives direction to move forward efficiently and cost-effectively with the best programs available to help Alberta fleets operate safely and successfully.

There are a number of major initiatives that moved forward this year. Ensuring the industry remains strong and vibrant is a priority, we have watched with delight as the New West Partnership (between Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan) has progressed, providing greater economic cooperation and the elimination of costly red tape. Considerable work also took place this year in encouraging Alberta to increase the overall length of an LCV to allow for longer wheelbase tractors.

Since compliance and safety training is a major initiative, we have significantly expanded our course offers. In particular, the number and variety of courses available online has increased. Online training is quite simply a less costly and more convenient method of course delivery for fleet and their employees.

Of great concern to North American businesses overall, including the trucking industry, is the ever growing shortage of workers. This year AMTA committed to an exciting new program to help raise awareness of the vast array of career opportunities in today’s trucking industry. The AMTA Road Knights Team program sees truck driver ambassadors meeting with job seekers, community groups and local schools to raise awareness of trucking careers. They are also available to speak to road users about how to safely share the road with trucks.

And on a final note, AMTA is guided by a volunteer board of directors and numerous committee participants. It is these people who devote their precious time, expertise and energy to guiding the organization and bringing you the always popular AMTA events (Draw Down Dinners, Golf Tournaments, Driver BBQs, etc). A large and special thank you to the many sponsors whose financial support makes these events possible.

I value your opinion and your ideas to make Alberta’s trucking industry the best it can be. Please contact me at 403-243-4161 or donw1@amta.ca

I wish you and yours a very happy holiday season. I look forward to serving you in 2012.

Don Wilson
Executive Director, AMTA
